15 Seconds of Jesus
A friend who was not a follower of Jesus once asked me how I had become a Christian. Excitedly I began to tell him. But five minutes in, as I dived into sharing my story, I could see that his eyes had started to glaze over. He was interested. But just not THAT interested!
Have you ever found yourself tongue-tied when someone asks about your faith? Or worse, have you watched someone's eyes glaze over like my friends as you rambled through your life story, desperately trying to explain your journey to Jesus?
You're not alone. That's why I want to share a simple but powerful tool that's can transform how we share our faith: the 15-second testimony.
Why 15 Seconds?
In our fast-paced world, attention spans are shorter than ever. But here's the thing: you don't need hours to share the essence of how Jesus changed your life. Sometimes, less is more. A concise, authentic story often creates more curiosity than a lengthy, meandering flow.
The Simple Formula
Here's the brilliance of the 15-second testimony:
1. "There was a time in my life when..." (Your starting point)
2. Two words about your life before Jesus
3. Two words about encountering Christ
4. Two words about the difference He's made
That's it. No Bible college degree required. No complex theology. Just your story, told simply and honestly.
Making It Work
Here's an example:
"There was a time in my life when I was hopeless and addicted. Then I was forgiven by Jesus and chose to follow him. Now I know the joy of knowing God as my Father and my life has purpose."
Notice what makes this powerful:
- You're prepared to give an answer when someone asks you - rather than trying to make something up in the moment
- It creates curiosity in people 'addicted in what way?'
- It opens the door for deeper conversation if people want to take it further.
The Magic of Curiosity
When you share briefly and authentically, people often want to know more. And that's exactly what we want - not to dump our entire testimony on someone, but to start a genuine conversation about faith. If they want to know more, they'll ask!
Your Turn: This Week's Challenge
1. Take 5 minutes to craft your own 15-second testimony using the structure above
2. Practice it with a Christian friend (as practice makes perfect!)
3. Ask the Holy Spirit for an opportunity to share it with someone who doesn't know Jesus.
A Final Thought
Remember, the goal isn't to perfect a script - it's to share authentically how Jesus has transformed your life. Your story matters, and sometimes the shortest version can have the biggest impact.
What's your experience with sharing your faith story? Have you tried condensing it down to its essence? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
Standing with you
